During the Victorian era, Scotland produced the best engineers in the world. It became routine for British ships to have a Scottish engineer on board. Star Trek’s Scottish engineer Montgomery Scott reflects this tradition.

I knew that, and I knew it when the series was first on TV. It was one of many the things that impressed me about it. (There were also a number of things about it made me roll my eyes to heaven, but I still loved it.)
The link to Victorian Britain seems to be broken.
Thanks, Jason. I’ve updated the link.
As well as British Ships having Scottish engineers, they had (and still have) navigation lights (red port, green starboard- and a few extras on aeroplanes). I can see why the Scottish engineer tradition carried onto USS Enterprise, but why did the navigation lights idea carry onto a vessel that travels faster than the speed of light?
